Viola

Probably but Early Dog Violet may confuse at this time of the year. The flowers are hard to tell apart and I rely on the Poland and Clement book to determine nowadays.

Thanks - I'd known this as "Heath Dog Violet".
Will go back if I can and have another sniff: but as it is close to Corus site, sulphurous smells from there can overpower more delicate odours!
