Bracket fungus

Observed: 18th January 2012 By: K80K80’s reputation in Fungi and Lichens

Large bracket, around 35cm wide and 20 cm in length (from short stem). Possibly a birch polypore. This specimen found on the ground by a rotten tree stump, with 4 others growing on it, all roughly the same size or bigger. Found in mixed woodland habitat. The majority of trees nearby were Larch and Scots Pine, not many birch around.

Caution: Do NOT use iSpot to identify fungi to eat!

Some fungi are very poisonous so a mistaken ID could have serious consequences.
