Description:

Deciduous tree, about 10m high, male catkins and female flowers together, last years "cones" also present.

The prefix 'Common' is often

The prefix 'Common' is often used and can be very useful
when specifically referring to A. glutinosa (though its also known as Black or European Alder).

Alnus cordata (Italian Alder), Alnus incana (Grey Alder), Alnus rubra (Red Alder), Alnus viridis (Green Alder) and Frangula alnus (Alder Buckthorn) are also recorded in GB and Ireland.
