This is not a first year bird as queried - the dark tip to the bill is indicative of 3rd winter. An adult would only have a red spot on the yellow bill.
A first year bird is largely brown like a Herring Gull but has darker wings, particularly the inner primaries which are dark, unlike the paler ones noted in Herring Gulls.
