Not sure how iSpot sees the Engrailed/Small Engrailed situation? I see them as conspecific.
Very pretty one there Cathal anyway, mine always tend to be rather dull.
I dont know myself Douglas, I think I saw a variety of suggested options when adding the scientific name but I based this ID on WTL and their images.
This moth was a bit smaller than some engrailed I recorded around the same time but after being told on BGM that the jury was out on there actually being any such thing as small engrailed, I have for the time being stopped worrying about it. For all I know it is accepted now there are definitely 2 species, but I still think this is just a regular Engrailed based on those WTL illustrations.
Yeah a lot of the Engrailed I see are similar in colour to a willow or mottled beauty but these pale ones are prettier in my opinion. Edit-should add, those 2 varieties of 'beauty' I mentioned tend to be drab and mostly grey where I encounter them, but really beautiful when fresh.
