Although I don't get the second ref to hirundo rustica which I'm assuming is also an amusing link between the barnacle and bird world?

Before Swallows were know to migrate, they were thought to spend the winter in the mud at the bottom of ponds - similar to goose barnacles which were thought to be the juvenile stages of migratory geese
