This beetle was on top of a farmyard wall,wondering if its somekind of water beetle.About 7-8 mm long certainly no bigger than a ladybird.
No interactions present.
Looks like it could be a water beetle, but if so it's not one I recognise, sorry. Do you have shots showing the legs or antennae? What size was it?

Agree it has a water beetle look to it but the patterns on the elytra and pronotum fit at least a couple of the Aphodius species - dung beetles.

and found that while its "acceptted" there are no records .What does that mean please?
Also the NBDC database show no records
Aphodius sphacelatus is recorded from Ireland so I don't know why these websites would show no records. Perhaps they are recently set up and don't have many data yet.
