Found several of these on Shanklin beach today.
In my textbook they are listed as Chroicocephalus ridibundus.

Latin name

David, there is an updated Latin name Chroicocephalus ridibundus. You might want to do a revised identification.

Thanks for the tip Chris, that's what came up in my textbook but the old name seemed to default on iSpot data base, many thanks anyway, I'm only just getting into birds, really a plant person, but enjoying learning new things about a group,of organisms that I've never really had time to study.Have added revision as you suggested.

No problem David, iSpot is incorrect on this issue and needs updating.

Black-headed Gull

Lovely pictures David! P.S. I too would have used Larus ridibundus (my books are old). Where does one find the most up to date bi-nomials?

Use the RSPB site, they seem to have all the latest names included.
