Possible stick-insect

Observed: 31st December 2011 By: bumble

Thin brown twig-like insect, approximately 15cms long, resting on a post in a holiday park in Devon - regret no photo. Looks similar to the ones seen in Cornwall, apart from being brown, not green - perhaps related to the post it was on. Locals report this as a common sighting, especially around Leylandii hedges.

  • stick-insect (Acanthoxyla ?species)

Possible Stick-insect

The Prickly Stick-insect Acanthoxyla geisovii has been recorded in nearby Ermington for about 30 years, and this species is also common in the Torbay region. The closely related Unarmed Stick-insect has also been recently recorded at Yealmpton.

See http://phasmid-study-group.org/content/Naturalised-British-Stick-Insects...

No records from Modbury have ever come my way, and a photo would be needed to confirm the species.
