A female and the clearly defined edge of the head colouring makes me think this is a Goosander rather than a Red Breasted Merganser but I may be wrong ?

Thank you - it's very different to the merganser picture in my book but at your suggestion I have done a web image search for the goosander. It certainly does look like a female goosander. Thank you!
