Can't really see anything from the photo, but from your description it sounds like it could be a barkfly:

Thank you so much - your suggestions have opened up an hour of fascination for me! It certainly looked very like some of the barkflies. Using the excellent photos on that web page and the distribution information from NBN I think it might have been an Ectopsocus species, though obviously since my photo is so poor and the animal itself is no longer to hand that's a tentative identification.
Two great websites though, thank you.
