Thanks for your comment Chris, but I don't understand what you mean. This is the scientific name given by the automatic function on iSpot and matches that in my book for black-headed gull. Obviously I'm not sure it IS a black-headed gull so are you saying I should use a different scientific name to go with a different common name? If so, what do you suggest?
iSpot is wrong on this point. Check on the RSPB site for the latest Latin name.
To assist you its Chroicocephalus ridibundus
The tail is white. The black is in the wing tips, which have a small white tip after the black. It is quite obvious in this bird...many show less white at the tip, which may apply to the others you saw. It certainly is a B-h Gull.
