Xanthoriicola physciae on Xanthoria parietina
Caution: Do NOT use iSpot to identify fungi to eat!
Some fungi are very poisonous so a mistaken ID could have serious consequences.
No interactions present.
I think I am right in saying this fungus is host specific to Xanthoria species, usually on X. parietina as in Jenny's photographs. This might seem odd when the specific epithet is "physciae".
However, once upon a time, what we now know as "Xanthoria parietina" was called "Physcia parietina".
The fungus is frequent but under-recorded.
Latest edition of a set of draft keys I am not allowed to cite indicates this fungus is apparently specific to X. parietina.
Hmm, confirms I have to go back to a site where my photographs suggest something similar on X. elegans. But there are other fungi that grow on Xanthoria spp. anyway, so I always did have to check.
Thanks Alan, I think I've a few more from different locations but the external drive with all my lichen photo's is behaving very badly at the moment ......
Sounds a bit worrying.
I note "external drive" singular. Your photographs are too valuable for that.
