egrets

A little egret would have a black beak. A white egret with a yellow bill could be cattle egret or great white egret. Both are very much less common than little egrets, but sightings are increasing and cattle egrets have bred in the UK recently. As you noticed that your bird was smaller than a heron it was likely to be a cattle egret.
