ID question

I believe there are numerous species of this fly which are very difficult to tell apart without close examination. Is it possible to species define this example?

Female

This is a female, with a pointed tip to the abdomen. As such, it cannot be identified to one of the three British species.

I spent many hours 'bug hunting' in hedgerows this year searching for Male scorpion flies but for some reason could only ever find Females. Next year it is on my top ten 'to find and photograph' list! Roll on spring....
