Description:

colour black on old oak tree.

Could it be Daldenia concentrica commonly known as King Alfred's Cakes or coal fungus, used as tinder for lighting fires?

I have

I lit one to see how it would go in my smoker (beekeeper). It 'fuffed' a bit at first but became a good ember and gave off a fair bit of smoke.
