ID information

The male has grey blue eyes. The thorax upper surface is dark brown with clearly defined straw coloured antehumeral stripes. The long slender abdomen is pale blue throughout with the exception of segment 1 that is black. A fine line runs down the centre of the upper surface either side of which is a single black dot.

Above features apply in the UK and northern parts of Europe.

Have you ever watched/photographed dragonflies in southern Europe Chris?
It's quite surprising how different mature male Keeled Skimmers can look, becoming pale blue all over including the thorax - so they lack the antehumeral stripes.

Keeled Skimmer

Hi Roy, nice to converse as I've seen your interest in Odonata.

Unfortunately circumstances restrict me to this country. I often look at images from Europe and wish I could broaden my horizons.

I saw an image the other day of such a Keeled Skimmer and it was causing much confusion on identification.

I like the Keeled Skimmer but I find them quite difficult to photograph as they are nearly always on confusing backgrounds. This image was an exception.

Kind Regards

Chris

Backgrounds

They do like to stay close to the ground - in the UK often with backgrounds of braken or heather. It makes it even more pleasing when you do manage to get a good clean shot though! :0)
