Description:

Large shrub with alternate leaves and mauve-red berries. The berries were slightly speckled although I'm not sure if this is normal. They had disappeared 2 weeks later.

Whoops!

Sorry, think I've changed my mind, didn't look at the close ups, don't think it's a Malus, looks a bit like Elaeagnus angustifolia, but not sure the fruits are right, will let someone else have a go!

There are times when I think

There are times when I think it would be more helpful to be able to delete a suggestion. However, thanks for the suggestion of Eleagnus which looks much more likely. According to Hillier's a number of species have speckled berries so this gives me a starting point to investigate further.
