It looks like Common (or Black) Knapweed (Centaurea nigra) as opposed to Greater Knapweed, but I've never heard it called Lesser Knapweed before.
Not sure where I've picked up the 'lesser' name from - I've always referred to it as that - mind you I haven't picked up a plant book for a while - will leave it up to the experts to decide for sure! Thanks for your comments!
The flower bracts are not those of a Centaurea, if you look closely. In Centaurea, they are broader, with dark fringes at the apex.

I can see both arguments here my first thought looking at the photo was Centaurea then I saw ophrys ID and I looked again I would have to agree with Cirsium if pushed. I am afraid I always say never ID from Photos as they can be so misleading, yet here I am doing it. Need to see more on this plant - I always tell my frends who ask for IDs take more photos, leaves, stem every bit of the plant. Sorry if I have bored anyone just my two pennyworth.
