Fungi around base of tree

Observed: 3rd December 2011 By: LodgeWatch

This fungi was found growing in an impressive formation around the base of a tree (which itself seems fine). This location is particularly damp this time of year. Indeed, stick an adventurous boot on to the grass here and it will disappear in a vacuum of mud fairly easily.
Edit: thank you for the ID, I've added a couple of extra photos if they help.

Caution: Do NOT use iSpot to identify fungi to eat!

Some fungi are very poisonous so a mistaken ID could have serious consequences.

The stems aren't easily visible on this one without pulling one off which I'm trying to avoid, but I've attached a further photo in case this helps.
