What are the differences to look out for when spotting dragon and damselflys?
If you mean between dragonflies and damselflies - damselflies are much daintier with smaller eyes and rest with their wings folded over their backs - dragonflies are much more robust stronger fliers with eyes that take up most of the head and generally rest with out stretched wings.
To identify individual species you either need a good field guide - I use Hammond - or to post good pictures on ispot. There are alkso some good id tips in the British Dragonfly Society site.
The common blue damselfly is one of several similar looking species and is best identified by the mark on the second segment of its abdomen - other blue damsels have different marks on that segment for example U on the Azure damselfly
