Slovenian grasshopper
Male grasshopper (Chorthippus sp.) calling loudly by fanning its wings, Julian Alps, Slovenia, July.
Description:

Lots of males were doing short display flights, then perching on rocks of pants to make a series of short churrs then long loud ones with the wings fanning as in the 2nd photo. Can't find a perfect match, but many grasshoppers have so many colour forms.. and Slovenia has so many species, some of them rare.

Grasshopper ID

Great, thanks Michael. I tried really hard to ID this and failed and am glad the behavioural notes helped. The displays were really distinctive and I'd only seen US species doing anything like this before. Now I know the likely species, I can find lots of good matching pics.
