Hoof fungus

The second photo, taken with flash, is how I first saw this fungus at the end of last year on a dead birch tree. The first photo is as it is now which makes me wonder how long these can live.

Caution: Do NOT use iSpot to identify fungi to eat!

Some fungi are very poisonous so a mistaken ID could have serious consequences.

I do think they can be there for years if I am wrong I am sure someone will correct me.

30 years apparently

Wikipedia says 30 years, referencing Olaf Schmidt's Wood and Tree Fungi: Biology, Damage, Protection, and Use (2006).

30 years!

Gosh, we've lived here for >20 years and I have to admit last year was the first time I saw this fungus. My only excuse is that it's on the other side of the tree to the footpath!

I'll make a point of looking for it each year from now on, and iSpotting it of course.
