this fearce looking insect observered through safety of a drinking glass after it flew into conservatory. note claw like appendages on legs presumably for gripping onto its host/prey.
I have revised the observation title and included a topside picture to aid identification.

This is an ichneumonid wasp, but not Amblyteles armatorius

Specimens with a single broad yellow band at base of gaster are not Amblyteles armatorius, which has a series of narrow yellow bands in the female, e.g. http://www.ispot.org.uk/node/86404 and two irregular yellow bands in the male, e.g. http://www.ispot.org.uk/node/224563.

an ichneumonid wasp (Ichneumon)

thanks for your clear explanation of the reasons for not being armatorius. I suppose it would be too much to hope to tie the identification down exactly.
