Strange substance

strange substance
Description:

I observed this strange substance on clumps of grass and thistles on open grassland.(There are no livestock kept in this field) It looks like fine cottage cheese covered in mucus, rather disgusting actually. It was very patchy and the clumps were quite small.I'm guessing it's a fungus of some sort...I'm sure it isn't dog vomit, though this is a popular area with dog walkers.I have seen it before at this time of year in the same area on misty damp days.

Identifications

Caution: Do NOT use iSpot to identify fungi to eat!

dog vomit

not unusual to think of these as dog vomit, in fact there is a slime mold commonly known as dog vomit fungus -- Fuligo septica

Habitat

The habitat is also a clue.
Mucilago crustacea is much more likely in grass and has been more common this year.
