I see why you think it is a chipmunk but the length of it's tail and its overall shape, but don't they normally have stripes?

Ground squirrel

This is a Californian ground squirrel (Otospermophilus beecheyi), a relative of the chipmunk. Note the mottled fur - grey, brown, reddish colours - and the pale ring around the eye.

These are fairly common throughout the Western USA.

If you want to put up an identification I'll agree to it.
