I saw these worms at 08.00 hrs. The air temperature was about 7C. At first I thought it was one dead worm as one worm had not stretched far from its burrow. Also my presence and close approach with the camera did not disturb it. After taking the photo I tried to turn the body over and they instantly retracted their bodies into the burrows. The acceleration was amazing! Examination of the zoomed photo showed the elongated body of the right hand worm hidden in the grass. I wonder if it is common for mating to occur above ground in daylight.
