Under surface

It helps when trying to identify the different Punctelia's to check the under surface of the lobes and the C reaction of the medulla (inner layer)

The under surfaces of P. subrudecta lobes are lightish-brown or whitish, darker-brown at the centre.
Medulla and soredia: KC+ red, C+ carmine-red

Many thanks Jenny

Your input is greatly appreciated. I'll remember to check the undersides next time I visit this area. I haven't progressed to chemical testing yet, but no doubt my enthusiasm will soon demand it!
