Description:

Reddish males (I guess) were grabbing the brownish females (I guess) by the scruff of the neck using the ends of their (the males')abdomens, and whipping the females up and down so that the females' abdomens touched the water. Were they laying fertilised eggs?
I watched one poor female being thrashed around in all directions except into the water by a very enthusiastic but obviously inexperienced male. A bit like doing a fast polka with a drunk.

Sympetrum

Does look like a species in genus Sympetrum, but don't know how many similar ones there are to choose from in Greece.
