A yellow and black striped hoverfly. Eyes touching, so male.
There were a group of hoverflies in dappled shade challenging each other for the best sunlit spots. After I'd watched a while my shoulder and then my wrist (it was easier to photograph them there), became a favourite perch to be defended. A male would sit there and whine until another challenged it when it would fly up, see off the intruder and return to its post.

In spite of the good photos, you cannot make out the presence or lack of hairs on the eyes, and so an ID cannot be taken beyond genus level.

Thanks for this - I'll have another go next year! I can sometimes manage a bit more detail than these pictures show and it's a real help to know what's needed.
