Moose

There is nothing quite like a moose! Note, the high shoulders and rump with a sagging mid-back - reminds me of an overworked horse; thick, stocky legs and and a perpetually startled look to the large, heavy-looking head.

Yes it was amazing to see one

Yes it was amazing to see one close up. Presumably this is a female so not the classic antlered moose appearance. It looked quite under-nourished after a harsh Canadian winter. I think they are attracted to the roadside to drink the salty water following winter road-gritting. It was dusk so the photo is a bit fuzzy.

I think you are right, this is probably a female as it does not have the heavy, bulbous head of the male. However, males may not have antlers in early April, they would be just starting to grow new ones.
