Sternbergia

The Flowers of Crete by Turland and Fielding lists 3 autumn-flowering Sternbergias...lutea, sicula and the endemic greuteriana. sicula is far the commonest, while greuteriana is rare outside the east of the island and is smaller even than sicula.

sicula should have a glaucous central stripe to the dark green leaves, which are 2-7mm wide. greuteriana has a vague green central stripe to bright, glossy leaves 2-6mm wide. lutea has broader leaves 7-18mm wide.

The whole thing is muddied by mixed populations...not easy at all!
