small flies in my compost

Does anyone know why i keep getting small flies in my pot plants, i believe that they come out of the compost. What kind of fly are they and do they help or hinder the plant?

Sciarids (fungus gnats) are commonly assciated with pot plants and can, if numerous, be a pest. The larvae live in the compost, particularly if it is has a high organic matter content, but (I think) may attack softer parts of the plant's root system. Worth checking out anyway.
