Tuft less useful in winter

Shags tend to be more marine, and they only show the crest when in breeding plumage. The browner colour and thicker bill are better indicators, and the whitish front helps to identify immatures. There have been single cormorants on the lower Lagan recently between Stranmillis and Edenderry, also juveniles. Adults are mostly back in breeding plumage and are back closer to nest sites.
