Description:

Several clumps of mushrooms growing on trunk of a fallen silver birch. Cap brown, various sizes about up to 5 cm maybe bigger, brown/yellow at centre and almost white at margin in some, convex or slightly bell-shaped, velar remains at margin in some. Flesh light brown. No obvious smell, no milk. Light-brown adnexed crowded gills. White stem, about 6 cm long, 0.6 cm across, no ring, a bit downy at top, browner at base, flesh same colour, a bit hollow towards base. Spore print dark brown/black. I'd convinced myself that this was P. sarcocephala but chickened out when I failed to find many references to it!
