Description:

Found on a tree that was badly damaged and probably on its way out. Very hard outer shell and chestnut brown inside, when cut from the tree

It is a Gannoderma but as has been said many times spores or internal structure necessary to split australe and applanatum. If you are able to cut the removed bracket in half as long as it has more than one years growth it should show all the details you need to give the correct id.
