I thought this may be of the Boletus family when I first saw it, only to find it had gills not pores. I believe it was a young specimin. Can anyone help please?

Pretty certainly a Russula. Probably one of the smelly ones, like foetens, but we'd need a lot more information about it before we could get it to species.
Smell? Spore colour? Gelatinous cap cuticle?
Even with the fruit body it may need to go under a microscope.

I orignally thought it was a young Russula by the bulbous shape of the stem...?
I'd love to know what this is! About how big was it? Is that leaf litter it was growing in from coniferous trees? Any idea what sort?
Hi it was only about an inch high as I remember & sorry I was on a countryside walk rather than commited foray so I didn't note the habitat!
