What is on top of the bit of wood does look right for the agreement but the stalk still looks like a bit of wood that has been planted in a mole hill.

Sorry for the quality of the

Sorry for the quality of the photo but I'm no expert on what to look for. It is indeed a fungus and NOT a piece of wood stuck in the ground. The location was next to the wall itself on the descent to the quarry. From memory there were no trees in the immediate area.

I know the exact spot as I live not far from the wall but Chollerford way,it is a lovely spot.
