Apple tree disease

Description:

This has appeared on two apple trees in our garden throughout the summer. Leaves start with a few brown spots, and up misformed, brown, withered, sometimes have holes in them. The one tree had a limited amount of fruit, the other had none. Otherwise they seem unharmed. There were a few scabs on the apples, unfortunately I don't have photos. Note that the brown "trails" that appear on some leaves, they don't follow the veins in the leaf.

... look like the activities of a leaf-mining insect - the apple leaf miner (Lyonetia clerkella) perhaps?
