This will have been eaten by a small vole or something like that. You will have to look for other signs of what is about. Whatever ate it must have had a small enough muzzle to get in.
looked up old but useful book discovering hedgerows streeter and richardson (isbn 0 563 16528 6 )which is info dense,recipes poems habitats etc etc and useful drawings. one hazel nuts attaked by weevil -no tiny,squirrel-no halved bank vole -no top off bird possibly but peck marks or wood mouse similar hole similar site.hope helps ann b
