Is this a fungus or lichen please?

Observed: 23rd October 2011 By: Joe30Joe30’s reputation in Fungi and LichensJoe30’s reputation in Fungi and Lichens

Found on a stump within an area full of Fern/Bracken and heather. Hope someone can help as it was very attractive!

Caution: Do NOT use iSpot to identify fungi to eat!

Some fungi are very poisonous so a mistaken ID could have serious consequences.

    Likely ID
    Cladonia chlorophaea
Confidence: I'm as sure as I can be.
Species interactions

No interactions present.

Many thanks

Thanks for helping to ID this pretty little lichen & fungus! I didn't really take much care taking the photo - is it likely to stay like this for long or does it die off quickly - I'll go back and get some better pics if its gonna stay around!

It will change, but slowly.

Lichens don't do anything fast (not even die), though Cladonia species can be positively speedy compared with many other lichens. A few things eat them, and they do make new growth at the speed of, well, something growing very slowly. It should stay much the same for a few weeks at least, perhaps even months. A year from now it won't look very different unless something has happened to it.

I assume you want to avoid that annoying, out-of-focus object in the foreground, and try for increased depth of field, so yes, technically your photo could be improved. But as I said above, from a lichen point of view this is already a very nice representation of the species.
