Subspecies

Fire salamander subspecies in Spain and Portugal are very confusing and lots of intermediate forms occur. Some of the described subspecies may not be biologically valid and there may be others that haven't been described. From the location it should be Salamandra salamandra gallaica, but the markings are not right. S.s. gallaica usually has lots of small spots and often horseshoe-shaped markings and usually has a lot of red markings too. This one has no red and almost has stripes, therefore I would think it is S.s. bernardezi, which is found just to the east. However, it's difficult to say and could be a mixture of both...

Subspecies

Again, many thanks for the comments MM. I will perhaps think of it as S.s devesana after my local village!

These could be found in my garden when I lived in Portugal near Sintra.A fantastic sight.
