I think this is an algae but not sure

Some fungi are very poisonous so a mistaken ID could have serious consequences.

On looking at the location my first idea is not as likely as i first thought. It looks more likely to be the fruits of a fungus that is too far gone for an ID.
This is actually in good condition and looking very typical. It forms these jelly-like masses on bare ground in continuously wet weather. On our campus it grows particularly well where lorries have cut corners and run over the edges of flower-beds - I assume soil compaction is a requirement.
