Fungus fruiting body, globular shape, about 7cm at widest point. 1st photo shows a whole one, the 2nd and 3rd show one that has burst open.

Of course! Now it seems obvious. In fact there was a snail inside the one that had 'burst open'. Thanks, Refugee, for giving me a good laugh at my own expense.
Citrus grows in the part of the world where the observation was made and also it looked like a lemon that had been in my compost heap for a couple of months. The only bit i did not get right was the snail that had hollowed it out.
