Nice observation. Water shrews are supposed to have venomous saliva. Did you have an effects from the bite?

It didn't actually break the skin! I wouldn't normally handle a shrew but my students wanted a closer look.

Water shrew

The relatively large size and clean line between the black back and white underside indicate this is a water shrew. Masked Marvel is right, watch that bite!
