Description:

These photos were taken in Sardinia last week about 15Km inland from East Coast in Srub. They were abunbant in number as most of the species of this plant in had a catapillar on. you can get an idea of the size against my fingers in Photo 1.

I think the plant they were

I think you are right Michael

I think you are right Michael - the Smoky Spurge Hawk-moth caterpillar has those small grey dots all over it - and also eats spurge! Thanks for the correction.

What a beauty ,I am very envious ,as I have searched for these caterpillars on several trips abroad ,with no luck at all .It looks like I am off to Sardinia then.

Hi there, If you make to Sardinia the exact location was a place TOMBA DEI GIGANTI S'ENA E THOMES - DORGALI (A Burial chamber dating back 3000BC)On the short walk from the car to the site we saw dozens. They were on every plant sometimes 2 or 3 to a plant!
