I think these are very good photographs that show this stage of the species well.
This comment particularly, plus others on the sighting, explains to me why my ID books were of no help - they only show the mature fruiting bodies.

I think it looks more like Ascocoryne sarcoides
I have some more photos which i'll put up when I get home this evening.
