I get woken by swifts most years, but this time they're nesting in the flat opposite my back window. Sadly they're a bit, er, swift to photograph...

nice pictures. Swifts can be rather tricky to photograph, try in very bright weather so the camera selects the fastest possible shutterspeed to freeze them. with digital camera you can have loads of attempts and don't have to worry about cost of film. The other thing to try is panning along with them as they fly, most times they will escape from the viewfinder but just occasionally you might get them flying along straight and level so you can get some snaps.
These are one of my favourite birds. I'm lucky enough to live in one of four houses which have rough hewn wood paneling on the front and pan tile roofs. We have a large colony of swifts living in our houses. I like nothing better than to leave the curtains open and watch the swifts swirling round the house at dusk. Even thier screeching calls are a pleasure. It is so sad that they are usually the last birds to return to my area and the first to go. To me they represent summer - it starts when they arrive and finishes when they go.

Swifts are now on the Amber List - they're birds of Conservation Concern. Their numbers have declined dramatically in the past 10 years. The RSPB are doing a survey to record groups of low level screaming swifts and nest locations. You can download a form, just follow the link below.
I sent in my results a few weeks ago, I am not lucky enough to have them nesting on my house but in the evening there are quite a lot of them feeding above my house. Rose.
Thanks Rose, I'd forgotten hearing about that - I'll send mine in.
Great stuff Alison, the more records that are submitted the better the RSPB can be informed and know where to focus attention. Your information will help their knowledge of swifts so that more nest sites can be provided and protected. Rose.
I had not picked up on this survey. I've just sent my records in.
