Long Black furry caterpillar

Observed: 30th September 2011 By: Helena1234

It crossed my path so was not on any food source, about 4in long which seemed very large for a British moth caterpillar and was covered in thick black hairs. Also 30 Sept seemed very late. Can't find match in my insect book.

Looking to hibernate

The food plant would be behind it as it would have been looking for a winter retreat. It is likely to pupate before it gets too clod in a dry sheltered location. The plant would be on the side it started from.
