Tracked this highly active beetle through the garden border for ten minutes trying to get a decent shot. Even after all that the head's a little out of focus.

You did well to get a photo at all, let alone one this good! Certainly a Notiophilus, and in my garden every one I've looked at has turned out to be N. biguttatus.

Thanks Martin, perseverance paid off in the end.
It seemed to key out fine apart from the final couplet where a good view of the grooves between the eyes would have helped, but the sinuous edge to the thorax was probably enough. I seem to remember that the alternative was a Highland species anyway. It's reassuring that you've always found biguttatus in the garden.
